The recent breach at India’s Parliament directed attention towards the issue of unemployment, suspected as a motive behind the incident. Six individuals accused in the breach allegedly protested against unemployment, among other grievances. Reports indicate that four of the accused were unemployed during the event.

Neelam, one of the accused, reportedly expressed frustration over her highly qualified yet jobless status, having completed multiple degrees. Another accused, Amol Shinde, desired a career in the Army or police and exhibited frustration due to unemployment. Engineer Manoranjan, described as choosing unemployment, and Sagar Sharma, an e-rickshaw driver due to financial constraints, further highlight the diverse circumstances of the accused.

According to Minister Rameswar Teli in the Lok Sabha, India’s unemployment rate showed a declining trend from 2018-19 to 2022-23. Despite this, data from the Annual Periodic Labour Force Survey revealed challenges. In 2022-23, graduate unemployment reached 13.4%, with 55.8% employed. The employment-to-population ratio rose to 56% in 2022-23 for individuals aged 15 and above.

Youth employment stood at 40.1% between July 2022 and June 2023, with a decrease in the youth unemployment rate from 17.8% in 2017-18 to 10% in 2022-23. Minister Teli also noted a decline in the unemployment rate for women aged 15 and above over three years, highlighting disparities in urban and rural unemployment rates between genders.
