BMW has announced the integration of DeepSeek, an open-sourced large language model (LLM), into its upcoming vehicle models in China later this year. The German automaker’s CEO, Oliver Zipse, made the revelation during the Shanghai Auto Show, highlighting BMW’s commitment to strengthening its AI partnerships and enhancing its Intelligent Personal Assistant with DeepSeek’s advanced functionalities.
According to Zipse, the collaboration will complement BMW’s existing AI systems and allow for an expanded range of in-vehicle services that extend beyond traditional automotive functions. “Starting later this year, we will integrate AI integration from DeepSeek in our new vehicles in China,” Zipse stated, emphasizing BMW’s focus on leveraging AI developments occurring within China. However, the move has triggered significant privacy concerns globally, particularly surrounding DeepSeek’s recent controversies. A South Korean government probe revealed that DeepSeek shared user data—including AI-generated prompts and device information—with third-party companies without user consent. This data was allegedly transferred to Beijing Volcano Engine Technology Co., a company linked to ByteDance, although officially claimed as a separate entity.
Despite DeepSeek’s claim that data transfers were intended to enhance user experience and system safeguards, authorities in South Korea have urged the company to halt the sharing of sensitive data and to establish robust legal protections. DeepSeek has reportedly ceased the transmission of AI prompt data and is cooperating with regulatory bodies to align with local privacy laws. BMW’s partnership with DeepSeek comes at a sensitive time, as multiple countries including the U.S., Australia, and Taiwan have implemented restrictions on the use of DeepSeek on government devices. While BMW has yet to disclose detailed implementation plans, the automaker faces increasing scrutiny over its reliance on DeepSeek, especially given the ongoing global debate about data privacy, AI governance, and the extent of China’s influence in emerging technologies.
