Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has raised significant cybersecurity concerns as young engineers gain unprecedented access to critical U.S. government systems. Security experts warn that this move could pose the biggest insider threat in the nation’s history. The DOGE initiative began at the Treasury Department, where Musk’s team took control of the federal payment system under the guise of monitoring public spending. The initiative quickly expanded across federal agencies, leading to disruptions and shutdowns of key organizations, including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Department of Education, and the General Services Administration (GSA).

Security experts Bruce Schneier and Davi Ottenheimer highlighted in Foreign Policy that the U.S. government may be experiencing its most consequential cybersecurity breach ever. At the Bureau of Fiscal Services, an internal report flagged that DOGE’s unrestricted access presents the “single greatest insider threat risk” the Treasury has ever faced. The core concern revolves around Musk’s team members—mostly young, unvetted professionals connected to his companies—being granted access to highly sensitive systems without prior government experience. Senior career officials, who traditionally safeguard these systems, have been sidelined, further compounding cybersecurity risks.

Additionally, at the Office of Personnel Management, DOGE-affiliated staff allegedly connected unauthorized servers to government networks, using AI tools on U.S. citizens’ personal data—an apparent violation of federal privacy laws. Experts fear that foreign adversaries, including China and Russia, could exploit these vulnerabilities. Michael Daniel, former White House cybersecurity coordinator, warned, “Government systems are complex, and experience is crucial. Any security lapse could have lasting consequences.” Musk, who dismisses government bureaucracy as inefficient, continues to defend DOGE’s mission. However, cybersecurity experts caution that unchecked power over critical systems could expose the U.S. government to severe cyber threats, jeopardizing national security.
