Japanese sportswear company Mizuno has officially confirmed a significant data breach stemming from a 2024 cyber-attack claimed by the BianLian ransomware group. The incident, which compromised sensitive customer information, was reported to regulators in Maine but left crucial details, such as the number of individuals affected, undisclosed. Mizuno detected malicious activity on November 6, 2024, and investigations revealed that hackers had infiltrated its systems as early as August 21. During this period, cybercriminals accessed and periodically copied customer data, including names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license details, and financial account information.
To mitigate the potential risks, Mizuno is offering affected customers one year of identity protection services. Despite filing the required breach notification, the Osaka-based company, which generates nearly $1.4 billion in annual sales, did not respond to requests for further comment. The BianLian ransomware group, notorious for targeting healthcare organizations and charities, claimed responsibility on November 11. They reportedly accessed sensitive financial records, vendor contracts, and human resources data. The FBI, which issued a warning about the group in late 2024, noted that BianLian’s key operators are likely based in Russia, though the group frequently adopts foreign-language names to obscure its true origins.
This attack on Mizuno highlights the persistent threat posed by ransomware actors to global businesses. With BianLian previously linked to attacks on institutions like Boston Children’s Health Physicians and Save the Children, authorities are stepping up efforts to track the group’s activities. As cybersecurity threats become increasingly sophisticated, the breach underscores the urgent need for companies like Mizuno to strengthen data protection measures and invest in advanced security technologies to safeguard sensitive information against evolving cyber risks.
