The role of the virtual Chief Information Security Officer, or vCISO, is evolving rapidly as artificial intelligence (AI) transforms cybersecurity service delivery. According to the 2025 State of the vCISO Report by Cynomi, the demand for vCISO services has skyrocketed, especially among small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). This surge is fueled by rising cyber threats and regulatory pressures, driving a remarkable 319% increase in vCISO adoption by managed service providers (MSPs) and managed security service providers (MSSPs) over the past year.

AI is a critical enabler in this rapid expansion, reducing manual workloads by an average of 68% for vCISO providers. This efficiency boost allows providers to serve more clients with the same resources while maintaining high service quality. Currently, 81% of vCISO providers use AI-powered tools to automate tasks such as risk assessments, compliance monitoring, remediation planning, and reporting. An additional 15% plan to adopt AI solutions within the next year.

Beyond workload reduction, vCISO services are becoming foundational to modern cybersecurity strategies, providing flexible, cost-effective executive-level expertise without the overhead of a full-time CISO. The integration of AI not only enhances operational efficiency but also increases profitability and customer retention for MSPs and MSSPs. This trend is reshaping the cybersecurity landscape, making strategic security leadership accessible to more organizations than ever.

As vCISO demand grows, providers are encouraged to leverage AI to stay competitive and scale effectively. For MSPs and MSSPs considering launching or expanding vCISO offerings, the time for AI-enabled services has never been better.
