As Data Privacy Day approaches, the spotlight turns to the urgent need for individuals and organizations in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) to take greater control of their data. A recent survey reveals that 70% of Australians feel they have little to no control over how their data is shared, while two-thirds of organizations admit their boards lack a thorough understanding of data governance challenges. Keir Garrett, Regional Vice President for Cloudera in ANZ, highlights the growing importance of robust data privacy strategies. “Data privacy is not just about compliance with regulations like New Zealand’s Privacy Act 2020 or Australia’s OAIC guidelines—it’s about empowering individuals to control their personal information,” Garrett notes.
This need is amplified by high-profile cybersecurity breaches that have eroded public trust. To combat this, businesses are urged to adopt secure-by-design data management platforms that integrate privacy measures from the outset rather than treating them as an afterthought. AI technologies are also shaping the future of data management in ANZ. Ben Chamlet, Senior Director for Solutions Engineering at Twilio, emphasizes the importance of transparency in data collection, especially in AI-driven interactions. A Twilio survey found that six out of ten Australian consumers view data protection as crucial for earning their trust, underscoring the shift toward ethical, first-party data collection.
Anthony Spiteri, Regional CTO for Veeam, highlights vulnerabilities in sectors like healthcare, which accounted for 18% of ransomware attacks last year. Spiteri calls for proactive measures, such as real-time tracking systems and employee training, to strengthen data protection. Data Privacy Day serves as a critical reminder for organizations across ANZ to balance the benefits of data analytics with ethical handling practices, ensuring public trust while fostering responsible innovation. As AI policies evolve in the region, transparent data governance will remain central to maintaining trust and driving progress.
