New York-based venture capital and private equity firm Insight Partners has disclosed that its systems were breached in January following a sophisticated social engineering attack. The firm, which manages over $90 billion in regulatory assets, has been a major investor in over 800 software and technology startups worldwide over the past 30 years. According to a statement released on Tuesday, Insight Partners detected the breach on January 16 and swiftly responded to contain and investigate the incident. The firm engaged third-party cybersecurity experts and notified law enforcement in relevant jurisdictions to assess the impact of the attack.
“As soon as this incident was detected, we moved quickly to contain, remediate, and start an investigation within a matter of hours,” Insight Partners stated. “We notified stakeholders connected to Insight in January to alert them and encourage vigilance and tightened security protocols irrespective of having shared data compromised.” While Insight Partners has not disclosed whether company or partner data was accessed, it reassured stakeholders that there is no evidence of attackers maintaining continued access to its network. Furthermore, the firm reported that there had been no additional disruption to its operations following the breach.
Insight Partners is actively working with cybersecurity specialists, forensic experts, and legal counsel to determine the full scope of the incident. “We don’t believe, based on what is known, there will be any material impact on portfolio companies, Insight funds, or other stakeholders. Insight will update any impacted individuals once information becomes available during our investigation,” the company stated. The venture capital firm has yet to share further details regarding the nature of the attack. Meanwhile, an Insight Partners spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
