OpenAI, the creator of the widely-used ChatGPT platform, has reportedly suffered a staggering 1,140 security breaches, according to new data from Cybernews. As the most recognized name in artificial intelligence, OpenAI appears to have become a prime target for cyber attackers. This finding comes amid increasing concerns about the cybersecurity standards upheld by major large-language model (LLM) providers. The Cybernews study, which assessed the top players in the LLM space—including OpenAI, Claude, Perplexity, and DeepSeek—revealed that five out of the top ten providers have experienced breaches. The report shows a troubling trend where even leading AI companies like OpenAI are failing to implement robust cybersecurity protocols.

Despite OpenAI having vast resources, it appears that basic cybersecurity measures are being neglected. A significant 45.4% of sensitive data prompts are being submitted via personal accounts rather than protected business channels. This practice leaves critical data more vulnerable to breaches. Moreover, OpenAI and all other LLM providers studied exhibited SSL/TLS vulnerabilities that could expose users to man-in-the-middle attacks. The Cybernews findings stress that businesses heavily relying on platforms like OpenAI must take immediate steps to secure their AI usage.

Corporate leaders are urged to vet LLM providers thoroughly and to enforce strict internal data usage policies. Yet, only 27% of senior leaders currently report having proper restrictions in place for chatbot interactions. As OpenAI continues to shape the future of AI, the pressure mounts for the company to prioritize cybersecurity. A shocking 98% of business leaders can’t spot all phishing threats, underscoring the urgent need for awareness and training. The sheer volume of breaches reported against OpenAI should serve as a wake-up call across the industry.
