The US is preparing for a wave of potential cyberattacks after recent military strikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a warning highlighting the increased risk of cyber retaliation by Iran or affiliated hacktivist groups. A national terrorism advisory bulletin released Sunday underscored that Iranian-linked hackers are actively targeting vulnerable US networks and internet-connected systems. With Tehran limiting internet access for its citizens, experts suggest that those involved in cyber operations either gain access through covert channels or are directly authorized.

Kristin Diwan, a senior scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute, noted that cyberattacks are an appealing strategy for Iran. “The US holds the upper hand on the battlefield, but cyberattacks offer Iran an indirect but effective form of retaliation,” she said. Her colleague Hussein Ibish agreed, suggesting that cyberattacks allow Iran plausible deniability and reduce the risk of further US military response. Iran is considered a top state sponsor of cyberattacks, frequently named in cybersecurity reports. Microsoft’s 2024 Digital Defense Report emphasized Iran’s aggressive cyber campaigns, especially those involving disinformation and political disruption. The Iranian group Mint Sandstorm has been tied to cyberattacks on US political campaigns and critical institutions, including universities, government agencies, and think tanks.

In one recent case, an Iranian national pleaded guilty to ransomware-related cyberattacks aimed at US targets, further heightening concerns. As a result of escalating tensions, DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks are seen as a major threat. These cyberattacks overwhelm networks with traffic, potentially crippling essential infrastructure like energy and water systems. Cybersecurity firm NetScout reported a significant rise in DDoS attacks globally, with the US among the most frequently targeted. As threats mount, the US remains on high alert, preparing its digital defenses for what could be a surge in cyberattacks from Iranian-backed actors.
