AI privacy has become a critical topic in global technology governance, as highlighted by BRICS leaders during the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro. Leaders from the 11 largest emerging economies—including India, Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa—ratified a joint declaration emphasizing the need for safeguards against unauthorized AI use, excessive data gathering, and exploitation of content without fair compensation.
The declaration marks the first time AI governance has featured prominently in the BRICS agenda, reflecting growing concerns in the Global South about AI systems developed predominantly by tech companies in wealthier nations.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the importance of balancing innovation with responsibility. “We see AI as a medium to enhance human values and capabilities,” he stated, adding that global collaboration is essential for responsible AI development. Modi also extended an invitation to BRICS partners for the AI Impact Summit hosted by India in 2026.
The joint BRICS statement called for a collective international effort to build AI governance frameworks that respect shared values, reduce risk, and ensure equitable access to AI technologies. This includes prioritizing AI privacy, ethical standards, and transparency—especially in data-rich AI systems that may impact citizens without their knowledge or consent.
As AI privacy issues grow globally, BRICS’ unified stance positions the bloc as a voice for inclusive governance and digital sovereignty in AI development.
