Kenya has emerged as Africa’s top performer in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and data privacy governance, according to a new report released by global technology firm ZOHO. The study highlights Kenya’s rapid digital transformation, driven by youthful leadership, innovation – focused policy, and a strong data protection framework.

According to the report, 96% of Kenyan organizations have already embarked on their AI journey — the highest rate across Africa. This widespread adoption reflects the nation’s growing tech ecosystem and commitment to leveraging AI for efficiency and innovation. Despite facing a 48.8% skills shortage in technical expertise, many Kenyan companies are overcoming these challenges through partnerships and custom – built AI solutions.

On the privacy front, 82.1% of organizations have enhanced user data protection following AI integration, marking the continent’s highest compliance rate. The Kenya Data Protection Act has played a key role in this progress, driving regulatory awareness and accountability across both public and private sectors. The report notes that nearly all organizations (94%) now have dedicated privacy officers, while two – thirds conduct regular privacy audits to ensure compliance.

Investments in privacy governance are also increasing, with 53.8% of firms allocating at least 20% of their IT budgets to data protection initiatives. These efforts include regular privacy impact assessments, internal training, and pre – launch system reviews.

ZOHO’s report positions Kenya as a regional model for responsible AI innovation — a nation that balances digital progress with robust privacy safeguards. Key areas of AI investment include customer service and software development, while AI literacy is expanding rapidly through training in data analysis and prompt engineering.
