Global cyber – threats are escalating as a new data breach study warns of record exposure of personal information — and consumers must act now to protect themselves. Cybersecurity experts say the recent forecast reveals alarming trends that could affect millions.
The 13th annual industry forecast from Experian reports that during the first half of 2025 alone, over 8,000 data breach incidents occurred globally, exposing approximately 345 million records. It warns that attackers are increasingly using advanced technologies, such as AI and quantum – driven methods, to craft convincing false identities and sneak past traditional defenses.
Michael Bruemmer, Experian’s Global Data Breach Resolution VP, noted that five of the six major predictions for 2026 involve artificial intelligence, polymorphic malware and even potential quantum – driven attacks. Among other surprises: a sharp rise in hackers from underrepresented demographics, including a growing number of women entering the hacking workforce — expected to nearly double by 2026.
This evolving threat landscape means traditional defenses may no longer be enough. Experts advise vigilance in everyday digital habits — avoid clicking suspicious links, skip unknown QR codes, steer clear of unsecured public Wi – Fi, and use tools like VPNs and encryption to protect devices.
On a personal level, everyone should treat identity protection as a top priority. That includes enabling multifactor authentication (MFA), using strong, unique passwords, and reviewing account activity regularly. For businesses and organizations, the call is even louder: adopt identity – first risk frameworks, monitor permissions closely, and stay ahead of threats by applying continuous security audits.
