Kettering Health has become the latest target of a significant cyberattack, with the Interlock ransomware group claiming responsibility for the breach. The nonprofit healthcare network, which employs over 15,000 staff and manages 14 medical centers and more than 120 outpatient facilities in western Ohio, disclosed the incident on May 20. The attack on Kettering Health caused widespread outages, disrupting call centers and patient care systems. Staff were forced to revert to paper charting methods due to the unavailability of electronic health record (EHR) systems. As a result, several elective inpatient and outpatient procedures were canceled, although emergency rooms and clinics continued to serve patients.

Kettering Health has since restored access to its EHR system. However, the MyChart application for patients and facility call centers remains offline. In response, Kettering Health has set up a temporary phone line managed by registered nurses to address urgent clinical concerns. While Kettering Health has not officially confirmed the identity of the attackers, the Interlock ransomware operation has taken responsibility, leaking samples of allegedly stolen data. The group claims to have exfiltrated 941 GB of data, including over 732,000 documents from more than 20,000 folders. The compromised information reportedly includes bank reports, payroll records, patient data, pharmacy files, and even identity documents such as passports.

Interlock, a relatively new but active ransomware group since September 2024, has been linked to numerous cyberattacks on healthcare organizations globally. Their tactics reportedly involve impersonating IT tools and deploying malware like the NodeSnake remote access trojan. Kettering Health is continuing efforts to restore full operations and has not released further information. The scale of the breach underscores the growing cyber threats facing healthcare systems, with Kettering Health now confronting a significant data security crisis.
