In a significant update to the 2017 Equifax data breach settlement, affected customers may now be eligible for additional compensation. The breach, one of the largest in history, exposed the sensitive personal data of 147.9 million Americans, including names, Social Security numbers, birthdays, driver’s license information, and even credit card details.
In 2022, Equifax offered impacted customers either $125 or 10 years of free credit monitoring as part of the settlement. However, some recipients reported receiving less compensation than expected. To resolve these discrepancies, Equifax is redistributing the remaining funds from the Consumer Restitution Fund to eligible customers.
The next round of payments will be delivered via electronic prepaid cards, with affected individuals receiving emails in the week of December 9, 2024, containing instructions on how to redeem the funds. While the exact amount to be distributed has not been disclosed, the settlement ensures that those who filed claims by the January 22, 2024 deadline for out-of-pocket losses or time spent resolving breach-related issues will be compensated.
Customers who did not file a claim by the deadline, but were still impacted by the breach, can access free identity restoration services until January 22, 2029. These services are part of Equifax’s ongoing efforts to assist individuals affected by the breach and help mitigate the risk of identity theft.
For many, this additional payment comes as a long-awaited response to the massive breach, which continues to impact individuals years later. The settlement efforts are part of a broader push for accountability in handling sensitive personal data. As the payment process moves forward, those affected are encouraged to check their inboxes and spam folders for their eligibility notifications.
The Equifax breach serves as a stark reminder of the importance of securing personal data and ensuring companies take responsibility when such breaches occur.
