The Tata Electronics cyber breach has escalated after sensitive files detailing components, suppliers, and prototype photos of Apple’s unreleased iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models surfaced on the dark web. The exposure stems from a ransomware attack carried out by the extortion group World Leaks, which had earlier posted more than 200,000 files allegedly stolen from Tata Electronics, Apple’s key Indian manufacturing partner.
According to Reuters, newly reviewed documents include at least six files that explicitly map iPhone 18 Pro components, such as main circuit board chips, battery parts, and camera modules, to their specific suppliers. This is the kind of granular sourcing detail Apple considers sensitive given that the documents relate to unreleased models, and information the company does not disclose in its public supplier database. The leaked trove also reportedly includes component design papers for older iPhone models, along with documents from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) and Qualcomm, both of which supply parts used in iPhones, as well as files belonging to Tesla, another Tata Electronics client. Among the most sensitive material are photographs reportedly showing iPhone 18 Pro units undergoing drop tests at a Tata facility, dated early 2026, depicting a conventional slab-shaped, grey handset with a three-rear-camera setup and the Apple logo. Reuters could not confirm the exact model number, but a source familiar with the matter said the images correspond to the iPhone 18 Pro line, expected to launch in September. RAPPLER
Tata Electronics has stated that the incident has not disrupted its business operations and that manufacturing activities remain unaffected. The company has since restricted employee access to its most sensitive systems and hired outside security experts to investigate, and has reportedly engaged a global consulting firm to conduct a forensic audit while reporting the incident to the Indian government. Apple has confirmed it is investigating the breach and working with Tata on long-term security measures. BigGo Finance
The breach carries heightened stakes given Tata’s growing role in Apple’s supply chain diversification away from China. India is projected to produce 26% of the world’s iPhones in 2026, up from just 6% four years earlier, underscoring how central Tata Electronics has become to Apple’s manufacturing strategy. The leak threatens to expose Apple’s negotiation leverage with suppliers and could hand competitors or counterfeiters insight into closely guarded sourcing relationships. MacDailyNews
The incident adds to a growing list of supply chain security concerns affecting global technology manufacturers, where even indirect access to design files, supplier data, and operational records can carry significant strategic and competitive risk.
